I Am the Bread of Life (Proper 19 year B)

There are four weeks of readings all based on this important issue of who Jesus is. John is an eyewitness. His account is different – meant to be read with spiritually opened eyes. We are in Pentecost where the readings for each week teach us about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the life of the church.

1. The Church has lost its supernatural truths

In writing Recovering Truth, Freedom, and Democracy: Challenging Woke Totalitarianism, I had a word of knowledge.

·      Writing about the Judeo-Christian foundation of truth all thriving democracies are based on and explaining how these have been lost as they contradicted the false truth of various woke activists.

·      Realized in my research I had identified 7 spiritual truths that have been almost lost as the Church expanded, grew, became intellectualized and politicized and was led by men who had not had the same experiences of Holy Spirit as the first Apostles.

·      We know these truths in our heads but may not really understand them and believe them in our hearts:

o   The holiness of God

o   The order and process of creation

o   Male and female identity and relationship

o   How Satan and Spiritual evil works

o   The divinity, resurrection and forgiveness of Jesus

o   Supernatural healing and deliverance ministry

o   Holy Spirit as the continuing presence of Jesus

·      These are the truths of the supernatural dimension Jesus disciples are struggling to understand in the Readings

2. Living bread that comes down from heaven (v. 31

Jesus is trying to explain the Holy Spirit who will come down from heaven after the Ascension.:

·      Living bread that grows, nourishes and gives spiritual life

·      Like the Manna that connected the Hebrew people to God, assured then of God’s favour and care

3. They will be taught by God 6. (v.43)

If Holy Spirit is the continuing presence of Jesus in the world, He has the same teaching and healing authority as Jesus.

·      Genuine prophecy and words of knowledge have more authority than the wisdom of teachers in the Church

·      Why we get in trouble when we vote on doctrine and church decisions instead of really listening to Holy Spirit

·      Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, guides us and heals us

·      Opens our spiritual eyes so we can understand the Bible

4. Whoever eats this bread will live forever

Jesus is talking about the sacrament of Holy Communion which helps us become more holy and able to stand in God’s holy presence when our body dies.

·      Receive in context of worship that connects our personal spirit to God

·      Receive in context of confession and absolution of sin

5. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30)

Our relationship with Holy Spirit is our relationship with Jesus:

·      Take it seriously - – there are consequences

·      Be very careful what you do and what you say!
